Job Summary #
The Peer Specialist Supervisor (PSS) provides supervision to certified peer specialists in accordance with Texas Administrative Code and Texas Certification Board standards. Supervision focuses on peer service delivery, skill development, problem resolution, and professional growth to support ethical and effective peer services.
Essential Job Duties #
A Peer Specialist Supervisor (PSS) is responsible for:
- Providing supervision that focuses on peer specialists’ provision of services, including:
- Reviewing of peer services, cases, and activities
- Skill-building and coaching
- Problem resolution
- Professional growth and development
- Reviewing of peer services, cases, and activities
- Conducting supervision at the required frequency:
- At least weekly for peer specialists with initial certification
- At least monthly for peer specialists with a two-year certification
- More frequently at the request of the peer specialist
- At least weekly for peer specialists with initial certification
- Delivering supervision:
- Individually or in group settings
- In person or via teleconference
- Including observation of peer services, when applicable
- Individually or in group settings
- Documenting all supervision provided to peer specialists
- Supporting peer specialists in understanding and adhering to ethical standards and applicable organizational policies
Scope of Practice #
- Supervision provided by a PSS is non-clinical unless the supervisor holds a separate license that authorizes clinical services.
- PSS certification does not authorize billing or collection of fees if prohibited by statute.
- The PSS must operate within the scope of their certification and any applicable professional license.
Required Qualifications #
- Current Peer Specialist Supervisor (PSS) certification through the Texas Certification Board
- Eligibility in one of the following categories:
- Qualified Credentialed Counselor (QCC), or
- Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts (LPHA), or
- Qualified Mental Health Professional–Community Services (QMHP-CS) with required supervision, or
- Qualified Peer Supervisor (QPS) with required supervision
- Qualified Credentialed Counselor (QCC), or
- Completion of approved PSS supervisor training and successful completion of the required knowledge assessment
- Ability to pass a background check in accordance with Texas Administrative Code
- Agreement to comply with the Texas Certification Board Code of Ethics
Documentation Requirements #
- All peer specialist supervision must be documented.
- Documentation must meet Texas requirements and organizational record-keeping standards.
