Peer Specialist Supervisor (PSS) Certification

Step-by-Step Guide (Texas)

Step 1: Review Eligibility #

Before applying, confirm you meet one of the approved prerequisites:

  • Qualified Credentialed Counselor (QCC)
  • Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts (LPHA)
  • Qualified Mental Health Professional–Community Services (QMHP-CS) with a QCC or LPHA supervising the QMHP-CS
  • Qualified Peer Supervisor (QPS) with a QCC or LPHA supervising the QPS

You must also be able to pass the required background check and agree to follow applicable ethical standards.

Step 2: Complete Required PSS Supervisor Training #

  • Complete an approved Peer Specialist Supervisor training.
    Signup for PSS Training with Peer Academy →
  • Successfully pass the Supervisor Training Knowledge Assessment.

Proof of training completion is required for the application.

Step 3: Gather Required Documentation #

Prepare the documents required by the Texas Certification Board. Not all items apply to every applicant.

Common Requirements

  • Completed PSS application
  • Application fee ($60)
  • Proof of supervisor training completion
  • Signed assurances and releases
  • Signed Code of Ethics
  • Copy of the state-issued ID
  • Background check results (see Step 5)

Additional Requirements (QPS Applicants Only)

  • Documentation of required peer specialist work experience
  • Copy of MHPS or RSPS certification

License Verification

  • Applicants must submit the license or supervising license required for their eligibility pathway (QCC, LPHA, QMHP-CS with supervisor, or QPS with supervisor).

Step 4: Complete the Application in Certemy #

  • Create a Certemy account.
  • Complete all required steps and upload documentation.
  • Submit the application for review by the Texas Certification Board.

Note: The required application type may vary depending on your education level and eligibility pathway.

Step 5: Complete the Background Check #

  • A background check is required for PSS certification.
  • Results must be submitted within 30 days of submitting your application.
  • Follow the background check instructions provided in the TCB application package.

Step 6: Application Review and Approval #

  • After submission, the Texas Certification Board reviews the application.
  • Applicants are notified of approval or any required next steps once the review is complete.

Timeline Note #

It is expected that the PSS certification process may take several months, depending on completion of training, documentation, and application review.
