Attention: Please be aware that the only way to know if your application will be denied due to your background check is by submitting your application to the Texas Certification Board (TCB). The suggestions in this article are written by the PeerForce team, not TCB.

If you are concerned that your criminal history will keep you from obtaining your Texas peer certification, we recommend you review the list of offenses provided in the TAC that the Texas Certification Board (TCB) uses for the peer certification qualification process. Click on the Chart of Offenses to learn more. TCB goes by the conviction date when reviewing your criminal history report.

If you have a conviction for any of the listed offenses, and it is within that offense’s respective timeframe of disqualification, there is a good chance your application may be denied.

Additionally, most applications will be denied if you are still on deferred adjudication probation, have any open charges or arrests, or the conviction date does not meet the timeframe in the TAC.

TCB does offer an appeal process to those who qualify. To learn more about the appeal process please read our helpful article on “What can I do if my application is denied due to my background check results?“

If you are concerned about your ability to pass a background check because of previous involvement with the criminal justice system, we encourage you to reach out to The Texas Certification Board to discuss what options may exist for you to continue your journey as a peer supporter. You may contact TCB via email at [email protected] or call 512-708-0629.
